Pilkington Ssengendo
Born in 1942 in Kampala, Uganda, Ssengendo received a diploma in
education in 1966. Since 1992 he is the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art at
Makerere University.
His earlier works, nationally and internationally appreciated, show mainly
impressionistic landscapes around Kampala in a fine technique. Delicate short
brush strokes for the scenery and a sky full of lightness and grace.
Later, Ssengendo concentrated his studies on the influence of African
material culture into art. He is inspired by bark cloth, a material with
multiple traditional uses, made from a tree bark. He believes that the modern
contemporary African artist has to understand his roots first to be confident
and self-assured even when he is handling abstract and modern art which tends to
go beyond figurative or narrative reporting.
