Gertrude Idah Kuseka Ssekabira
Born in 1955 in Kampala, Gertrude Ssekabira graduated from Makerere
University, Faculty of Education and Art. She is well known both nationally and
internationally.
Like many Ugandan artists she has a critical point of view regarding the
social situation in the country. Her particular concern is the misery of
children, repeatedly expressed in her paintings. In her style in oil and water
colours she remains free of the rules of perspective and statics, thereby
underlining the dramatics of the subject. Soft brush strokes in the
characteristic red-brown of the African soil, in contrast with light reflecting
cool colours, give the paintings an irresistible dynamic.
It is surprising to discover the contrast between her realistic artistic
expression and her warmhearted and deep emotional personality.
