Rose-Marie Rychner
Rose-Marie Rychner was born in Germany, where she was raised and
educated. She was trained in painting, restoration of icons, graphics, sculpture
and textile design in Germany and France.
Moving to Africa in 1982, she continued her
artistic activities in teaching art and craft in Senegal, Ivory Coast,
Botswana and Uganda. Apart from that, she also
managed marionette theatres with the aim to promote inter-cultural exchanges and
environmental awareness, while continuing her painting.
In July 1993 she moved to Uganda. Here she started to work intensively. Using
pastel painting in large sizes, she developed a more Africa-inspired, colourful
harmony, woven into a distinctive style of her own. She has put her experience
in art and art presentation into promoting talented young artists. Her efforts
are focused on organizing exhibitions for Ugandan artists in Kampala and abroad.
In 1994 she acted as curator for the Ugandan artists at "Africus", the
Johannesburg biennale in South Africa.
She is the author of 'Contemporary Art - Uganda'
(1996), which describes and shows the revival of the arts in Uganda after the
civil war which ended in 1986.
Over and above all these talents and activities,
Rose-Marie is an accomplished documentary-video film maker and producer. Her
love for Africa is reflected in everything she undertakes. As a thanks for her
contributions to the development of the arts in their country, the Ugandan
Government bestowed upon her the name of "Kentaro" which means
"warrior".
