Geoffrey Katantazi Mukasa
Geoffrey Mukasa, the son of a medical doctor, was first steered towards medicine
to follow in the footsteps of his father. He therefore reluctantly concentrated
on sciences and for a while relegated art to the status of a hobby. However the
untimely death of his father at the hands of Amin's soldiers brought drastic
changes to his life. He realised he did not have to become a medical doctor to
please his father anymore and decided to go for further training in visual arts.
After a stay in Kenya, he chose to go to India to pursue a Bachelor in Fine Arts
degree.
India greatly inspired Mukasa. He found himself
exposed to both European and Indian aesthetic values and threw himself into his
work with vigour. He discovered great affinity to the cubist movement in
particular, which is reflected in his works.
Focused mainly on human relationships with the
environment and their harmony his works emerge from interaction between humans,
flora, and fauna. As a concise
draughtsman with sure but highly sensitive brush
strokes he has developed his own symbolism, whose lines delineate large imposing
forms. His subjects are the pristine beauty of the environment just outside the
window of his studio, as well as its degradation.
Mukasa is a quiet and shy, but a mature and
prolific artist. Strong messages emerge from all his paintings which leave the
viewer in a deep state of meditation.
