Summary: In the 1960s, Uganda and the Makerere

Even during the Obote and Amin years of dictatorship, in spite of
political terror and civil war, Ugandan artists and writers, inside
and outside the country, continued to be creatively productive. The
foundation of this volume, which deals with Uganda's cultural
development over the last 40 years, was laid during a meeting at
Makerere University in 1994. Contents: Margaret MacPherson on the role
of Makerere University; James Tumusiime on Uganda's book industry;

respectively; Ernesto Okello Ogwang on Ugandan poetry; Susan Nalugwa
